Radiograph analysis:

Patient was brought in for radiographs to assess bone healing of the right ulna after fracture repair done on 2/12/25. The radiographic views taken were right extremity lateral, right extremity lateral oblique, and right extremity cranial-caudal. Patient was anesthetized for this process, and anesthesia went smoothly. Radiographic interpretation was showing good bridging for the proximal ulnar fracture that was seen from the IM pin insertion site. The original fracture line in the distal part of the ulna had a very faint radiolucent line associated with it. There was some displacement noted at the proximal fracture site of the right ulna, but not enough to cause concern for ability to heal without the fixator still in place. We removed the external fixator and pins. There was a healthy amount of granulation in the pin tracks, so we opted against applying any topical antibiotics or external coaptation. We plan for the patient to remain inside CCW for another week to allow the patient time to recuperate without the external fixator before putting her into a flight aviary to strengthen her flying ability. The plan is to slowly wean her down on the Gabapentin that she has been receiving as well to prepare her for going into the aviary.

Bandage change:

The patient's previous bandage was removed and the external fixator and its pins were inspected. The pins and suture site all looked good and free of any drainage or inflammation. The IM pin site had a slight amount of drainage, but was not excessive or malodorous. Laser therapy was then performed for 8 minutes on both the dorsal and ventral aspect of the wing over the ulna. The pin sites were then all cleaned with dilute betadine. Gauze padding and vet wrap was then placed around the external fixator. Tape tabs were also added to vetwrap layer to prevent chewing on the vetwrap around the fixator.

Changed bandage on R wing.  ESF bar is still intact, pin sites are all clean and dry.  The IM pin site has healed over and looks good.  Placed new wrap of cast padding and vetrap over ESF bar.

SK noticed some mild chemosis of the ventral lid OS.  There was a small amount of crusted debris there and it appeared that the feathers along the lid margin had become stuck to the skin ventrally causing the lid to roll open slightly.  Flushed the area to free the feathers and remove debris.  Performed IOP and FS.

Bandage change:

Patient was brought in for bandage change and radiographs to examine bone healing. The patient was placed under isoflurane anesthesia and monitored throughout the imaging and bandage change. Heart rate and respiratory rate stayed consistent throughout anesthesia.  The bandage was removed by cutting the top 2 layers first, followed by the gauze wrapping around the external fixator. Images were taken on the portable x-ray set up for demonstration. I personally was not able to evaluate the radiographs with Dr. Sokoloff, but her statements after were that there was a concern for bone splitting at the IM insertion site. There was also good bone callous formation occuring along the fracture line. We cut and removed the IM pin before beginning to rebandage the wing. The insertion site for each pin was cleaned with dilute betadine and applied a layer of triple antibiotic ointment and tefla to each site. The external fixator was then wrapped in a layer of gauze bandage material, followed by wrapping in vet wrap. Tape tabs were added to the outside layer of the bandage to prevent the patient from pulling at the vet wrap.

Bandage Change:
The bandage was removed. All pins were relatively clean at the time of bandage removal, except for the IM pin that had a bit of oozing coming from the pin's exit point. The pins were cleaned with dilute betadine, and triple antibiotic ointment (Neo-poly-bac) was applied to all of the exit points of the pins. Laser therapy was used to promote tissue healing. Telfa was placed around the pins, then the bar was covered in cast padding and vetrap, with tape distraction tabs.
